Tensions have escalated in Sudan as a result of efforts to transition to a democratic government following a military coup in 2021, leading to clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and a government paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Force (RSF) in Khartoum.
Against this backdrop, a video showing a horrific blast is widely shared on social media, claiming that a family from Haryana is trapped in Sudan amidst this conflict.
The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “सूडान संकट में फंसा जींद का एक परिवार। (English translation: A family of Jind stuck in Sudan crisis. FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
Performing a Reverse Image Search, we traced a Facebook post carrying the same viral video, dated December 4, 2019, with a caption: “A gas tanker in #Sudan exploded at a ceramics factory in the industrial zone of Bahri, #Khartoum.
At least, 23 people were killed and 45 injured.” The same video was shared in a tweet dated December 3, 2019, with the text, “Part of the explosions that occurred at the Salome Ceramic Factory This explosion is very scary.”
Below is the comparison between the viral video and the Facebook video posted in 2019.
Several Arabic-language news reports in 2019 have carried the same incident with similar images. According to one report, “A massive fire broke out in a refugee camp for South Sudanese in Khartoum Bahri (North) on Saturday. More than 100 homes burned to the ground. The fire, which was caused by an explosion of a gas pipeline, lasted more than one hour. Several camp residents sustained serious burns and some children went missing in the panic. The material damage is huge.”
The same viral video was also published by ABP News on December 5, 2019, with a caption: “18 people died in Sudan blast.”
According to reports, Aman Gupta, a resident of Jind, his wife Dikshita and their two-year-old daughter were also stranded in Sudan. He somehow escaped from there and reached Sudan Port, and on April 27, his family was also brought to India.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old unrelated video of a blast in a Sudan factory is falsely linked to the recent conflict.
