The farmers’ protest in 2024, led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, involved over 200 farmer unions marching to Delhi on February 13, 2024. The Delhi Chalo march was announced in December 2023, demanding a legal guarantee of MSP, implementation of the Swaminathan formula, etc. Amidst this, an image has surfaced on social media claiming to be recent.
The picture is shared on Facebook with a caption: मोदी सरकार द्वारा देश के अन्नदाता किसानों को रोकने के लिए जितनी ताक़त लगाई जा रही है उससे कम ताक़त में तो MSP क़ानून बन सकता है।लेकिन नीयत हो तब ना #FarmersProtest #FarmersProtest2024 (English translation: MSP law can be made with less force than the force being used by the Modi government to stop the farmers from providing food to the country. But only if the intention is there.)

Running a Reverse Image Search of the picture, the NM team traced a report in India Today, dated February 03, 2021, carrying the same picture with a caption: “Farmers’ protest gets international support, causes ruckus in LS; Internet back at Delhi borders | Roundup”. This indicates that the viral picture is from the Gazipur border.
According to the report, “The farmers’ agitation against Centre’s farm laws has gone international. Tweets by renowned pop star Rihanna and climate-activist Greta Thunberg favouring the protesting farmers have stirred up a hornet’s nest with the Opposition calling it a hit at India’s reputation and the government taking a strong exception of the comments by the foreign celebrities.”
Searching further, we found a similar image on Alamy, dated February 03, 2021, with a description: “Indian Police in riot gear stand on guard behind barricades at the Ghazipur Border. As farmers’ protest against the three farm acts continue at Ghazipur border, Delhi Police sealed the border with barriers, concrete walls, and barbed wire fence to keep off farmers from accessing it for their protests.” This clarifies that the image is from the Gazipur border and is old.
Thus, we can conclusively say that an old image from the 2021 farmer’s protest has been shared as recent with false claims.
