A picture claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin was a Buddhist monk earlier and practised Buddhism for seven days is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the image showing Putin can in a monk’s attire and meditating with hands closed.
A Facebook user posted the viral post, with a caption: রাশিয়ার প্রেসিডেন্ট পুতিন। মাত্র ৭ দিনের জন্য বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের শ্রামন হয়েছিলেন এবং বৌদ্ধধর্ম চর্চা করেছিলেন। (English translation: Putin is the president of Russia. He was the Shraman of Buddhism and practised Buddhism for 7 days.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.
Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture, we traced to a Facebook post, dated March 18, 2023, on a page named AI Creatives Thailand. The picture of Putin in the post matches exactly with the viral picture, and we can also see a similar image of American President Joe Biden in the same post. The caption of the image informs that the photos are not real and have been created using AI picture-developing tool, Midjourney.
Searching further, we found a similar post published on the profile of another user from Thailand. The bio of this user states that he is a member of the page AI Creatives of Thailand and is a Digital Creator by profession. Many AI-created images have been found on their profile, including the cast of the famous show Game of Thrones. The user has developed every post by using Midjourney. Also, they have given due credit to the AI tool, proving that the viral picture is not real.
We could not find any credible news source linking Putin to Buddhism. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral picture is fake.
