Fact Check: No! PM Modi and Amit Shah Were NOT Spotted Wearing Skullcap Ahead Of West Bengal Elections

Date:

In the backdrop of the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, a picture showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah wearing skullcap is doing rounds on social media.

The text on the picture reads. “भगतो आपके चचा और पिताजी तो बेवफ़ा निकले आपको भागती का पाठ पढ़ाया और फिर जा टपके बंगाल में मुस्लिमों के द्वारे” (sic)

(Translation- Followers, your father and uncle turned out to be unfaithful, taught you the lesson of devotion and then went to the Muslims in Bengal).

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above images and found that the picture of PM Modi and Amit Shah sporting skullcaps is morphed.

We cropped the picture and put it through Reverse Image Search, which led us to a photo gallery by News 18 featuring the original picture published on August 28, 2019, in which the two leaders can clearly be seen without skullcaps.

The headline of the photo gallery read, “PM Modi, Amit Shah Meet Arun Jaitely’s Family to Offer Condolences”.

The caption of the picture read, “PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah leave after paying their condolence to the family members of former finance minister late Arun Jaitley, at their residence in New Delhi. (Image: PTI).”

We found the picture on the Getty Images website as well. In the picture, neither PM Modi nor Amit Shah can be seen wearing the skullcap.

According to the caption, the duo was spotted after paying their condolences to the family members of former finance minister late Arun Jaitley, at their residence on August 27, 2019, in New Delhi.

In the FAKE vs REAL collage, it is clear that the original picture was manipulated using photo editing software to create a morphed picture.

From the above information, it becomes clear that the picture is old and PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were not spotted wearing skullcaps.
