Ahead of assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, an image has surfaced on social media platforms showing several Bhartiya Janata Party flags stuffed in a huge garbage bin. The image is being circulated with captions suggesting that it is a recent image from western UP.
A Facebook user shared the image with a caption in Hindi that roughly translates to: Here you go, someone from western Uttar Pradesh sent me. Now you see ahead.
(Original:ये लो,पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश से किसी ने मुझे भेजा।इब आगे आप देख लो)
The image is viral on Twitter with the same claim.
FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral image and found it to be shared with a misleading claim.
With the help of a Reverse Image Search, we found the image in a Tweet posted on June 5, 2021, with a sarcastic caption, “On this #WorldEnvironmentDay take a pledge to throw kachra in the dustbin & keep your environment clean.”
On checking further, we also found the image in several other Facebook and Twitter posts since 2018.
We also found the image carried in a Lokmat story on the compilation of political memes following the assembly polls in Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Madhya Pradesh on December 11, 2018.
NewsMobile couldn’t independently verify the origin of the image, however, it is clear that the image is not a recent one from poll-bound UP and it has been in circulation online since 2018.
