Fact Check: Old Image From Yemen Erroneously Linked To The Ongoing Israel-Palestine Conflict

Date:

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has so far resulted in over 2,000 reported casualties in Israel and nearly 12,000 in Gaza, including 5,000 children. Meanwhile, an image showing a boy dragging the body of a child on the road has gone viral on social media. Many users claim that Israeli soldiers killed Palestinian children who went out for water.

A Facebook user shared this image and wrote, “A pair of Palestinian siblings went to fetch water but were killed by Israeli soldiers. The younger brother dragged his sister’s body home.”

It is being widely shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search, our team spotted the viral image in a tweet by the official handle of the Yemen Embassy in The Hague, dated November 2021. According to the tweet, the viral image is from the Yemeni city of Taiz showing Houthi war crimes against children.

With an open keyword search, our team found the viral image in a report by The Islamic Information, dated August 20, 2020. As per the report, in Yemen’s southwestern city, Taiz, a 9-year-old girl was shot in the head by Houthi Snipers as she was getting water.

The Middle East Mirror, dated August 18, 2020, reports that a girl named Ruwaida Saleh, 9-10 years old, was shot by a Houthi sniper in Taiz City while carrying a 20-litre water container. Her brother was then seen dragging her body away from the scene.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old unrelated image from Yemen is falsely linked to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
