Fact Check: Old Video Falsely Shared As Recent Protest Against PM Modi In Maldives

Amid the diplomatic row between India and the Maldives, a video of a protest has gone viral on social media claiming it to be a recent protest against PM Modi in Maldives. 

A Facebook user shared the video with a caption: A huge protest in Maldives against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After week ago Maldives prime minister’s controversial statement #maldives #india #pliticalway #narendramodi #tourism #boycottmaldives #lakshdweep.”

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post, and found it to be old.

Doing a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team traced an X post carrying the same video, dated June 29, 2023, with a caption: “#IndiaOut”.

Searching further with the keyword ‘IndiaOut Campaign’, we found a report by Scroll, dated July 01, 2023, carrying the same tweet and same visual.

The title reads: “After ‘India Out’ protests, the Maldives government issues condemnation.”

Also, a YouTube video by ​​FirstPost, dated July 20, 2023, carries visuals similar to the viral clip, with a caption:Maldives: Why Ex-President Abdulla Yameen Is Reviving “India Out” Campaign|Vantage with Palki Sharma.”

Hence, it is clear from the above findings that the video in question is quite old.
