Fact Check: Old Video Of Anti-Israel Protest In Sweden Fictitiously Shared As Recent

Date:

Amidst the ongoing protests in Sweden against Israel’s participation in Eurovision, a video is going viral showing clashes between the police and protesters. Many users allege that Muslim migrants have damaged properties during the recent protests in Sweden.

A Facebook user posted the video, saying: Muslim migrants who were given shelter in Sweden πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ are destroying Swedish taxpayers’ property because an Israeli singer took part in Eurovision. It’s time to treat them like the enemy they are.

Fact Check

NewsMobile fact checked the claim, and found it to be misleading.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team spotted a video report by Sydsvenskan, the dominating newspaper in the southern region of Sweden, dated May 15, 2009, with a title: β€œKravaller och stenkastning i Malmâ” (English translation: Riots and stone throwing in MalmΓΆ).Β

Upon comparing both the viral video and the video report, we found them to be similar.

According to the CBC report, dated March 8, 2009, anti-Israel activists clashed with police while attempting to storm a closed arena in Sweden where the home country and Israel were playing a Davis Cup tennis match. The activists hurled rocks and firecrackers at police vans in an attempt to break through the barricades set up to keep protesters from entering the arena.

We also found another YouTube video report with similar visuals by AP Archive, dated July 21, 2015, titled β€œAnti-Israeli protesters clash with police outside tennis venue”. Although the video was uploaded on July 21, 2015, the report description mentions the dateline as March 8, 2009.

According to the video report, dozens of rock-throwing anti-Israel activists clashed with Swedish police in an attempt to storm a closed arena where Sweden and Israel were playing a Davis Cup tennis match. About 100 people were apprehended, and at least six individuals were formally arrested for rioting, as stated by a Malmo police spokeswoman.

Thus, it is confirmed that the video in question is fabricated as it is not from the recent protests in Sweden against Israel’s Eurovision participation.
