Fact Check: Old Video Of Drunk Policeman Falsely Shared To Suggest ‘Change In Punjab’ After AAP’s Win

Date:

After AAP’s big win in Punjab Assembly Elections, a video showing a drunk policeman is being widely shared on social to take a dig at Chief Minister-designate Bhagwant Mann’s erstwhile alcoholism issues. Sharing this video, social media users are claiming that this is the “change in Punjab”.

The video is being shared on Facebook with a Hindi caption, “पंजाब में बदलाव शुरू हो गया”

(English Translation: Change started in Punjab)

Here’s the link to the above post

The video is being widely shared on Facebook

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed a YouTube channel that carried the same viral video on April 13, 2017. The headline read: “Punjab Police Alcohol Drink On Duty Amritsar”. This clearly means that the video dates back to 2017 and is not recent.

We found the same viral video uploaded on another YouTube channel on August 1, 2017, with the description, “Punjab Police drunk policeman on duty.”

We also did a keyword search but could not find any recent credible media report to suggest that any Punjab policeman was found drunk during his duty.

Although we could not trace the origin of the viral video, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is old.
