Fact Check: Old Video of Protest in London Falsely Linked with ‘IT Survey’ at BBC Offices in India

Date:

A video has gone viral on social media, claiming that a protest rally in London demanding the resignation of PM Modi after the income tax department conducted a ‘survey’ at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai.

(English translation: After the IT raid…Don’t think that the BBC is like Indian media that get scared right away…on the banks of the Thames, London)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found the video to be old.

We found multiple media reports from 2021 carrying similar images of the protest.

According to a report by The Quint, members of South Asia Solidarity Group — an Indian diaspora organisation — on India’s 75th Independence Day dropped a huge banner reading ‘Resign Modi’ from London’s Westminster Bridge.

However, our search found a press release, dated August 14, 2021, on the website of the South Asia Solidarity group.

According to the press release, they demanded the resignation of Narendra Modi over various incidents of caste and religion-based violence in India, and many such other issues.

The press release also carried the longer version of the protest video.

Thus, it is clear that the video is old and NOT related to the IT raid on BBC’s India offices in February 2023.
