Fact Check: Viral Post of a Man Jumping from a High-rise Is NOT Related to Recent Turkey Earthquake

Date:

Over 8,000 people have died after three powerful earthquakes struck Turkey on January 6. Against this backdrop, a disturbing video of a person falling from a great height is widely shared on social media claiming that the person jumped out of a high-rise during the earthquake.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “En la desesperación se tira del edificio por miedo a que el edificio colapse por el Terremoto M7.8 de Turquia” (English translation: In desperation, he jumped from the high-rise fearing that the building will collapse by the M7.8 earthquake in Turkey)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we traced a news report carrying the same viral video in 2022, with a caption: “A person was injured when he jumped from the balcony for fear of an earthquake.” This clearly means that the viral video is related to the recent Turkey earthquake.

Several media reports had carried the same video on November 23, 2022, with a caption: “Person jumping from window injured in earthquake in Düzce.”

According to reports, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Turkish city of Düzce on November 23, 2022. The name of the individual shown falling in the video was Ada Lain. He leapt from the third story of his residence, resulting in two broken arms. There were no fatalities or serious damage recorded as a result of these tremors.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video of a man jumping from a building is falsely linked to the recent Turkey earthquake.
