Fact Check: Viral Screenshot Of NYT Article on US Troops for Ukraine Is Morphed

The screenshot of an article purportedly published by The New York Times shows a headline: “Let’s go to the aid of Ukraine,” with a strapline, “The White House decided to send a limited contingent of troops to Ukraine. They won’t survive without us.” It’s claimed that White House has made a decision to send limited number of troops to Ukraine, which some believe could provoke Moscow to initiate World War III.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “BREAKING – The White House decided to SEND a limited contingent of TROOPS TO UKRAINE Can be seen as a reason to start World War III because it was officially declared. Meanwhile, keep updated Subscribe to @WW3INFO”

Here’s the link to the above post.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Running the screenshot through Reverse Image Search, the NM team found a statement by NYT regarding the image. The statement, posted on February 28, clarifies that the newspaper has not published any article regarding sending limited contingent of troops to Ukraine.

A spokesperson for the NYT has also confirmed to Reuters, stating that the “image is fake”.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral screenshot is fake.
