Fact Check: Viral Video Of Paragliding Mishap In South Korea Falsely Linked To Israel-Hamas Conflict

Date:

After Hamas militants used paragliders to enter Israel by air to launch their deadly attack, a video showing a paraglider crashed into a high-voltage electric transformer went viral on social media claiming that the militants were crashed into a high-voltage power line.

A Facebook user shared this video and wrote: “Hamas paraglider crashes into a high-voltage electric power line and bursts into flames. Did he deserve this… YES or NO? Yes, He didn’t say enough Allahu Akbars No Virgins for you my man only Crispy Bacon.”

This Facebook post can be seen here.

It is being widely shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, our team spotted a similar clip on a YouTube channel, dated June 2023, with a title: “Paraglider hit high-voltage transmission lines and caused fire.” It is to be noted that the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas started on October 7.

Using the relevant keywords, we traced a news report of CQ News, dated June 19, 2023, carrying the viral video. According to the report, the incident took place on June 16 when a person crashed into high-voltage power lines while paragliding near Seopjikoji on Jeju Island in South Korea.

The JoongAng, a South Korean media outlet, reports that on June 16, 2023, around 4.35 pm, a man in his ’60s paragliding near Seopjikoji Beach in Jeju died after getting caught up in a high-voltage wire.

Thus, we can conclusively say that the viral video is old and unrelated to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
