Fact Check: Was PM Modi Waving Towards Sea At Sudarshan Setu? Here’s The Truth

Date:

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Sudarshan Setu — India’s longest cable-stayed bridge — which connects the Beyt Dwarka and Okha mainland. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also present at the opening ceremony. The bridge is unique with its walkway decorated with pictures of Lord Krishna and verses from the Bhagavad Gita. It also has solar panels installed, capable of producing one megawatt of electricity. Against the backdrop, a video has gone viral claiming that PM Modi walks on the Sudarshan Setu bridge while waving towards the sea. Formerly referred to as the ‘Signature Bridge’, it has been renamed as ‘Sudarshan Setu’.

A Facebook user posted with a caption: “Why is @narendramodi waving at the fishes? 🤪🤪 #narendramodi #modiji #nodifunny #funny #stupid #wtf #india #westbengal #mamatabanerjee”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be Misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search on video keyframes, our NM team traced an X post by ANI, dated February 25, 2024, with a caption: “#WATCH | Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sudarshan Setu, country’s longest cable-stayed bridge of around 2.32 km, connecting Okha mainland and Beyt Dwarka.”

It informs that PM Modi was waving at people on the boats near the Sudarshan Setu bridge in Gujarat during the inauguration.

We also found the whole event video live-streamed on PM Modi’s YouTube channel, dated February 25, 2024. The video was posted with a title: “PM Modi inaugurates Signature Bridge & Views Gallery in Dwarka, Gujarat.” The description box says, “PM Modi inaugurated Sudarshan Setu which connects Okha mainland and Beyt Dwarka island built at a cost of around ₹980 crore. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the country around 2.32 km.”

On February 25, 2024, The Indian Express reported on the inauguration, highlighting that following a ceremonial pooja at the Dwarkadhishji Mukhya Mandir, Prime Minister Modi embarked on a leisurely walk along the sea link, waving and greeting fishermen and ferry-boat passengers as they passed by on vessels.

Hence, we can conclusively say that the widely circulated clip of PM Modi waving towards the sea is untrue. Taking a stroll on the sea-link, he waved to fishermen and ferry-boat operators.
