Chidambaram to stay the night in Tihar Jail; this is what he will get

Date:

Former Union minister P Chidambaram would be lodged in Tihar Central Jail no. 7, which is meant for accused involved in economic offences and other minor offences, according to reports.

He will be served the same food which is provided to all inmates, said Director General of Delhi prisons, Tihar, Sandeep Goel on Thursday.

“He will be kept in a separate cell in jail number 7 and will be served roti-dal-sabzi (chappati, pulses and vegetable) which is given to all inmates,” Goel told ANI.

“He will be provided spectacles, medicine and western toilet, in accordance with court’s directives,” he added.

Earlier while being taken to the Tihar jail, amidst high-security, the Congress leader waved to his supporters from the windows of the police bus.

Chidambaram is being taken to Tihar jail after a CBI court sent him to judicial custody till 19 September in the INX Media case.

Before leaving, he made a statement about the economy of the country and how that’s the only point of worry for him.

“I am only worried about the economy,” said former finance minister P Chidambaram on Thursday in remarks made just after a CBI court sent him to judicial custody till September 19 in the INX media case.

The Congress leader gave the statement when he was asked what he has to say after the court order.

In a similar instance, on September 3, Chidambaram took a jibe at the government over the growth rate of 5% in April to June quarter him when he was asked about his custody in CBI.

“Five per cent. What is 5%? You remember 5%?” he responded with a smiling face, mocking the government after the GDP slumped to an over six-year low. According to government data, the economic growth slowed to a seven-year low to 5 per cent in April to June quarter from 8 per cent a year ago.

Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court also rejected his plea challenging the Delhi High Court order that had refused anticipatory bail to him in the INX Media case.
