FRIENDS Cast’s First Response After Matthew Perry’s Demise

Date:

New Delhi: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer released a joint statement honoring their late Friends co-star, Matthew Perry, who died at the age of 54 on Saturday.

“We were more than just castmates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

Perry, best known for his performance as the witty and endearing Chandler Bing on the popular sitcom, was found dead in his Los Angeles residence’s hot tub, law enforcement sources told media on Saturday evening.

The Los Angeles county medical examiner conveyed that the exact cause of death awaits determination through an autopsy, pending a toxicology report. Cap Scot Williams, heading the city’s police robbery homicide division investigating Perry’s death, stated that foul play is not suspected.

“Friends,” a show about six friends living in New York City, became super popular, winning many awards and high ratings. In 2004, after 10 seasons, the last episode was watched by over 52 million people in the US, making it the most-watched TV episode of the 2000s.

Perry openly shared about his battles with addictions. In his memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” he wrote about becoming an alcoholic during his teenage years and dealing with addiction to pain medication following a jetskiing accident in 1997. Perry openly admitted that he couldn’t rewatch “Friends” due to the noticeable changes in his health during that time..

“I was taking 55 Vicodin a day, I weighed 128lb [58kg], I was on Friends getting watched by 30 million people – and that’s why I can’t watch the show, because I was brutally thin,” he said.

The Friends co-stars Marta Kauffman and David Crane, together with executive producer Kevin Bright, issued a joint statement on Sunday.

“It still seems impossible,” they wrote. “All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives. He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliché to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words.

“From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart. We send all of our love to his family and friends.”
