Govt should focus on fulfilling its promises, ‘One Nation, One Election’ is long-term affair: Akhilesh Yadav

Date:

Advising the government, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav Wednesday said that the Centre should focus on fulfilling the promises it made during elections rather than raising issues like ‘One Nation, One Election.

Speaking to news agency ANI in New Delhi, he said, “The ‘One Nation, One Election’ idea is a long exercise and it will take time to see the ground reality. The government should instead focus on the promises it made during the elections, right now they have got the majority and they should focus on their promises. Decisions like ‘One Nation One Election’, there are many parties that will never agree to it.”

Moreover, Yadav did not attend the all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday evening to discuss the concept of ‘One Nation, One Election’ among other things.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Union Minister Rajnath Singh said that the government will form a committee to study the feasibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Nation, One Election’.

Several opposition parties including the Congress gave it a miss. Those that had no representation at the meeting include NDA ally Shiv Sena and opposition parties DMK, TDP, Trinamool Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
