Himachal: National Highway Washed Away As Beas River Rises Above Danger Level

Date:

Kullu: A portion of the national highway, along the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu, was washed away following massive landslides, triggered by heavy rain.

Videos surfaced showing that the Beas River has risen to dangerously high levels in the Charudu village, forcing a house to be submerged in water. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) successfully completed a risky rescue effort after acting quickly to address this dangerous situation, ensuring the safety of five people trapped inside the flooded residence.

“Operation is still on to rescue other three-four trapped victims from adjoining piece of land in Beas River,” said NDRF officials.

The persistent heavy rainfall in the Mandi and Kullu regions has resulted in a significant rise in the water level of the Beas River, leading to landslides and flash floods across multiple areas.

Informing about the traffic restrictions put in place for the safety of people due to the rise in water level in the Beas river, the police said, “Due to heavy rains, the movement of vehicles from Kullu and Manali towards Atal Tunnel and Rohtang has been completely stopped due to falling of stones at many places on the Kullu-Manali road and due to the increase in water level in Beas river near Ramshila.”

Considering the unfavorable weather in Himachal Pradesh, the HP Traffic, Tourist, and Railways Police authorities issued an important announcement on Sunday. Train service on the Shimla-Kalka heritage rail section has been cancelled due to continuous heavy rain and subsequent waterlogging. In addition, due to the heavy rains on the Kalka-Shimla railway route, the railroad track at Tunnel No. 10 between the Koti and Sanwara railway stations has been temporarily blocked for safety reasons.
