The tension between Iran and Israel escalated significantly as Iran reportedly launched drones and missiles towards Israel on Saturday. Alongside these direct attacks from Iran, proxies and allies of Iran also coordinated assaults on Israel. An Israeli army spokesperson described the onslaught from Iran as a “massive swarm” comprising killer drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles.

- In response to the attack Israel has put in a request with the United Nations Security Council to immediately convene a meeting to unequivocally condemn Iran and designate its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
- Israel’s permanent representative to UN, Gilad Erdan stated in a letter to the president of the UN Security Council, “I sent an urgent letter tonight to the President of the Security Council. I demanded the urgent convening of the council and demanded that the council unequivocally condemn Iran’s attack on Israel and declare the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organization. Iran’s attack is a significant threat to world peace and security and I expect the Security Council to act against Iran by all means.”
- President Joe Biden issued a strong condemnation of Iran’s attacks against Israel, denouncing the unprecedented air assault on Israeli military facilities.
- President Biden in a statement said, “Earlier today, Iran—and its proxies operating out of Yemen, Syria and Iraq—launched an unprecedented air attack against military facilities in Israel. I condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms.”
- Responding to the escalating tension between Iran and Israel, India’s Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said, “We are seriously concerned at the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran which threatens the peace and security in the region. We call for immediate de-escalation, exercise of restraint, stepping back from violence and return to the path of diplomacy.”
- Following Iranian attack on Israel, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned Iran’s large-scale attack on Israel, CNN reported. Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, expressing deep alarm over the potential for a devastating region-wide escalation.
- Guterres in a statement said, “I am deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation,” Guterres said. “I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East.”
- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz came out in support of Israel, saying the drone strikes by Iran were ‘unjustifiable’ and ‘high irresponsible’.
- The German Chancellor in a post on X wrote, “The attack on Israeli territory that Iran launched tonight is unjustifiable and highly irresponsible. Iran risks a further escalation in the region. Germany stands by Israel and we will discuss the situation with our allies.”
