Kamal Haasan jumps into the CAA stir, files petition in SC against the Act

Date:

Tamil Actor and chief of the Makkal Needhi Maiam Kamal Haasan has joined the stir against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 on Monday.

He called the agitations taking place against the legislation, as the start of end of anti-national forces.

He filed a case in the Supreme Court challenging the legislation saying it was passed within four days when the economy of the country was in a poor condition. He said: “Democracy can prevail only as long as power is in the hands of the people”.

He said, “Farmers are in crisis, women safety has become a major concern and economic slowdown is staring at people. When people are numbed by these many issues, what was the urgency to bring in the amendment to the Citizenship Act”.

He called out the government for the discrimination that it is trying to perpetuate. He Tweeted the following message,

“Why are Tamils who are subjected to a methodic genocide and Muslims facing discrimination, be excluded from the bill? If it’s a genuinely benevolent bill and not a vote garnering exercise, then why won’t this CAB stop to pick up stranded Tamils & troubled Muslims of Srilanka?”.

He also strongly opposed the crackdown on the students in various parts of the country and said:

“We all need to dive deep into the river of democracy to get rid of the dictatorship forces and to breathe independent air once again”.

On Wednesday, he joined students protesting at the University of Madras.

Other film personalities like Richa Chadha, Twinkle Khanna, Swara Bhaskar and Farhan Aktar amongst others have opposed this legislation.
