Leading the charge at the 81st Golden Globes, Oppenheimer and Succession marked a dominant start to Hollywood’s award season.
With eight nominations, Oppenheimer secured five wins, including the prestigious Best Film (Drama).
Christopher Nolan claimed Best Director, while Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. clinched top acting honours for their compelling portrayals of Robert Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss, respectively. Oppenheimer’s victory extended to Best Score as well. In an unexpected turn, Poor Things triumphed over Barbie for the title of Best Film (Musical/Comedy), with Emma Stone earning the Best Film Actress (Musical/Comedy) accolade. Additionally, The Holdovers’ stars Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Randolph emerged victorious as Best Actor (Musical/Comedy) and Best Supporting Actress in film. Lily Gladstone’s performance in Killers Of The Flower Moon earned her the Best Film Actress (Drama) award.
Succession, The Bear, and Beef swept their respective categories. Kieran Culkin’s portrayal of Roman Roy secured the Best TV Actor (Drama) title, while co-stars Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen clinched Best TV Actress (Drama) and Best Supporting Actor (TV). Succession also claimed the Best Series (Drama) award.
Beef took home the accolades for Best Limited Series, Anthology, or TV Movie, with Ali Wong and Steven Yeun securing the Best Actress and Best Actor awards.
For The Bear, Jeremy Allen White secured his second consecutive win as Best TV Actor (Musical/Comedy), alongside co-star Ayo Edebiri’s victory as Best TV Actress (Musical/Comedy). The Bear also claimed the Best Series (Musical/Comedy) award.
The Golden Globes return this year under new ownership after facing criticism and boycotts directed at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the former organizers of the awards. The show is now owned by a production company with a longstanding history of producing and broadcasting the event. Comedian Jo Koy helmed the Golden Globes, which introduced two new categories this year: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on TV.
