New York: The anticipation for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has intensified as the first batch of Indian players has arrived in New York, marking the commencement of their journey for the prestigious event.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video clip on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle. The video showcased the Indian cricketers arriving at the airport in New York and subsequently boarding the team bus. Sharing the clip the BCCI wrote, “✈️ Touchdown New York! 🇺🇸👋#TeamIndia 🇮🇳 have arrived for the #T20WorldCup 😎”
Among the notable names in the contingent are skipper Rohit Sharma, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and the number one-ranked T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav.
India’s T20 World Cup campaign is set to kick off on June 5, where they’ll face Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, a newly constructed venue. The fixture everyone is eagerly awaiting is the India-Pakistan clash scheduled for June 9, promising a high-octane showdown.
Following this, India will square off against tournament co-hosts USA on June 12 and Canada on June 15, wrapping up their Group A assignments.
With their eyes set on ending a dry spell in ICC tournaments, India enters the fray aiming to secure their first major ICC trophy since lifting the Champions Trophy in 2013. Despite several close calls, including appearances in the finals of the 50-over World Cup in 2023 and the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023, as well as reaching the T20 World Cup final in 2014 and semifinals in 2016 and 2022, India has fallen short of clinching the ultimate prize.
