Speaking to reporters during the signing ceremony at the Oval Office, Trump said, “We’re making it a national monument and it will not be allowed to be touched by anybody.”
The announcement comes just two days after the midterm elections, in which voters unhappy with Trump’s economic policies dealt a major setback to Republicans, with Democrats gaining control of Congress.
Meanwhile, the proclamation is part of a series of recent remarks by Trump focusing on his ongoing projects in Washington, D.C. Over the past three days, he has repeatedly highlighted plans involving an elaborate White House ballroom and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has introduced several decorative changes across different rooms.
The Oval Office has undergone a notable makeover, featuring portraits, a replica of the Declaration of Independence and multiple gold-coloured decorative elements.
