Will Rescue People From Coastal Areas: Mamata Banerjee Amid Cyclone Mocha Scare

Date:

Kolkata: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted that cyclone Mocha is expected to make landfall in West Bengal and parts of Odisha.

According to reports, the circulation intensified into a low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal adjoining the Andaman Sea today (May 8) morning at around 8.30 am. Initial forecasts indicate rapid growth, intensifying into a depression by Tuesday (May 9) and then into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday (May 10).

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a statement assured people to not fear the cyclone as the state government is equipped to handle the situation.

She said, “We will rescue people from coastal areas as the cyclone will move to Bangladesh and then Myanmar,”.

IMD said the cyclonic storm Mocha is likely to move initially north-northwest wards till May 11 and thereafter it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeast wards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.
