Tiger found dead, suspected to be killed in a territorial dispute

Date:

A two-year old tiger was found dead in Dhamokhar range of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve’s buffer zone, 16 km from Umaria district headquarters, a forest department official said on March 31.

Injuries on the body suggested that the cub was possibly killed in a territorial fight with another tiger, he said.

BTR field director Mradul Pathak said that forest officials had received information on March 29 that tigers’ roars were being heard in Dhamokhar range. A team was sent to the area, which found two tigers fighting with each other. The officials separated them before returning.

However, a fight seemed to have erupted again later in the night during which the cub was possibly killed, Pathak said.

The exact reason of death would be known only after reports of autopsy and viscera examination are received, he said.
