COVID-19 | Brazil overtakes UK to report the second highest death toll globally

Date:

Brazil, on Saturday, overtook United Kingdom to become the country reporting the second highest number of COVID-19 deaths.

The number of people, who have died of COVID-19 in Brazil, increased by 909 to 41,828 within the past 24 hours, as per the national Health Ministry said on late Friday (local time).

Within the same period of time, the number of confirmed cases has risen by 25,982 to 828,810.

A day earlier, Brazil reported about 30,412 new cases of the coronavirus disease and 1,239 new fatalities.

Brazil ranks second in its COVID-19 tally as well, after the United States, which has recorded more than 2 million COVID-19 patients.

Last week, the Brazil government removed the coronavirus data that was being documented over time.

President Jair Bolsonaro had defended the move by saying that it was ‘necessary’ as there were delays and changes to official record-keeping, as per Al Jazeera.

Bolsonaro had also threatened to pull Brazil out of the World Health Organization (WHO) last week.

This threat came after the UN Health Agency warned against the lifting of lockdown in the Latin American nation.

The President has been strongly opposed to imposing any form of a lockdown, as it would have economic ramifications.

The World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on March 11.

To date, more than 7.6 million people have been infected with the coronavirus worldwide, with over 424,000 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.
