Indian-Origin Candidates Make Their Mark In US Midterm Elections

Date:

Washington: Indian-origin politicians recorded several significant victories in the November 3 US midterm elections, with candidates securing seats in Congress, state legislatures and gubernatorial contests, while others faced defeats in closely watched races.

The elections, which will shape political control during the remaining two years of President Donald Trump’s term, covered all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 37 Senate seats and gubernatorial contests across 36 states.

Among the prominent winners, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy lost the Ohio gubernatorial race to Democrat Amy Acton by more than 200,000 votes. Acton’s victory also marked the first time since 2006 that a Democrat had won the state’s governorship.

In congressional contests, Ro Khanna retained California’s 17th District, defeating Indian-American challenger Ritesh Tandon by over 42,000 votes. Pramila Jayapal also secured another term in Washington’s 7th District, defeating Nirav Sheth by more than 152,000 votes.

Ami Bera won his eighth congressional term in California’s 3rd District, defeating Republican Robb Tucker by over 23,000 votes. Suhas Subramanyam was re-elected in Virginia’s 10th District with more than 61% of the vote. Democrat Pia Dandiya also won Florida’s 22nd District with 51.9%.

Other notable developments included Amish Shah leading in Arizona’s 1st District and Pooja Sethi winning the Texas House District 47 contest. Aruna Miller retained her position as Maryland’s Lieutenant Governor.

Meanwhile, Nithya Raman was locked in a close contest against incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.

At the state level, Arvind Venkat and Ram Villivalam secured re-election, while Nabeela Syed defeated Republican incumbent Darby Hills in Illinois. Jyot Singh also made history by becoming the first Sikh American and Indian American elected to the Georgia General Assembly.

The results highlighted the growing representation of Indian-origin leaders across American political institutions.
