Austin: Democrats have swept Texas’ statewide elections, securing victories across the state’s top political offices and ending more than three decades of Republican dominance in the traditionally conservative state.
The historic gains include Gina Hinojosa defeating Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in the governor’s race, James Talarico winning the US Senate contest against Ken Paxton, and Democrats capturing other key statewide positions, including lieutenant governor and attorney general.
The outcome marks a major political shift in Texas, where Republicans have held the governor’s office since 1995 and dominated statewide elections for decades.
The last time Democrats won statewide offices in Texas was in 1994, when the party retained several important positions, including lieutenant governor, attorney general and comptroller. However, Democratic Governor Ann Richards lost her re-election bid to George W. Bush that year.
Democrats’ 2026 sweep is therefore particularly significant, representing their strongest statewide comeback in decades. The results also signal a change in the political landscape of a state that has consistently backed Republican presidential candidates in recent elections.
