World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill To Miss India’s Game Against Afghanistan

Date:

New Delhi: Shubman Gill will miss India’s second World Cup match against Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday due to dengue. He had already missed the opening game against Australia in Chennai.

The BCCI mentioned that Gill won’t travel with the team to Delhi and “will remain in Chennai under the care of the medical team.”

Two days before the Australia game, head coach Rahul Dravid said, “Gill is in better spirits today compared to yesterday, which is a positive. However, the medical team is closely observing him daily. With 36 hours remaining, we’ll assess the situation as we approach the last possible moment before making a decision.”

“We waited until this morning, and he couldn’t recover,” Rohit Sharma said at the toss against Australia.

With Gill unavailable Ishan Kishan opened the innings with Rohit Sharma. Despite India facing a challenging situation at 2 for 3 while chasing 200 – with Kishan, Rohit, and Shreyas Iyer dismissed for ducks – they managed to bounce back, successfully chasing down the target with six wickets in hand and 52 balls to spare.

Gill tops the charts as the highest run-scorer in ODIs this year, accumulating 1230 runs at an impressive average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. In his recent four ODIs, he secured two centuries and a half-century.

Following their match against Afghanistan on October 11, India will journey from Delhi to Ahmedabad for their clash against Pakistan on October 14.
