India’s top organisation for indirect taxes has reportedly issued notices to food delivery giants Zomato and Swiggy for unpaid taxes totaling around 7.5 billion rupees ($90 million), as per CNBC-TV18 sources on Wednesday.
The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has allegedly presented a tax demand of over 4 billion rupees to Zomato and approximately 3.5 billion rupees to Swiggy, citing the delivery service as a taxable activity subject to goods and services tax (GST) from July 2017 to March 2023.
Zomato chose not to comment on the matter, and as of now, Swiggy and the DGGI have not responded to Reuters’ requests for clarification. (Note: $1 = 83.2440 Indian rupees)
