Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Vijay Kumar Sinha, expressed condolences on X (formerly Twitter). Sinha wrote, “Senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Shri Sushil Modi ji is no more among us. This is an irreparable loss for the entire BJP organization family as well as countless workers like me. He will always be remembered for his organisational skills, administrative understanding and his deep knowledge of social and political issues. May God grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength to the family in this hour of grief.”

Modi had opted out of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections on account of his health. He had announced it in a post on X. “I have been battling cancer for the last 6 months. Now I feel that the time has come to tell people. I will not be able to do anything in the Lok Sabha elections. I have told everything to the PM. Always grateful and always dedicated to the country, Bihar and the party,” his post read.

Sushil Kumar Modi, born on January 5, 1952, embarked on his political journey as a student activist at Patna University, where he notably held the position of general secretary of the Students’ Union in 1973. Over the span of three decades, he navigated through various political roles, serving as MLA, MLC, and a member of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Notably, he held the position of Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar twice, first from 2005 to 2013, and later from 2017 to 2020. His political career saw him elected as an MLA for the first time in 1990, representing the Patna Central constituency.

Additionally, he commanded the role of leader of the opposition in the state assembly from 1996 to 2004. In a strategic move in 2004, Sushil Modi transitioned to national politics by securing a seat in the Lok Sabha from Bhagalpur. However, the following year, in 2005, he relinquished his Lok Sabha position to join the legislative council and assume the mantle of Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar.
