Former US President Barack Obama has welcomed the Democratic Party’s performance in the 2026 midterm elections after the party secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, dealing a major setback to President Donald Trump and the Republicans.
In a post on X, Obama said the results reflected voters’ desire for a political environment that prioritises unity over division and offers practical solutions to public concerns.
“Tonight, the American people sent a clear message, they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face,” he wrote.
Obama credited Democratic candidates across the country for the party’s gains, noting that several victories came in regions previously considered difficult for Democrats. He said the candidates represented diverse backgrounds and political perspectives but were united by a commitment to public service.
The former president also thanked election officials and volunteers from both parties for ensuring the smooth conduct of the polls, describing their work as an essential part of American democracy.
Looking ahead, Obama said that although the Trump administration would remain in office for another two years, Democrats must use their political position to push for changes, prevent further damage and prepare for the future.
The midterm results mark a significant shift in Washington, as Democrats are set to gain control of both chambers of Congress. The outcome is expected to create a tougher legislative environment for Trump during the remaining two years of his presidency.
