Washington: Indian American Democratic leader Ranjeev Puri has won reelection to the Michigan House of Representatives from District 24 and is expected to become the next Speaker of the state House after Democrats regained control of the chamber in the November 3 US midterm elections.
Puri’s expected elevation to the post would make him the first Indian American and Sikh to serve as Speaker of the Michigan House, according to Michigan Advance. He currently serves as the Democratic leader in the state House.
The Democratic Party reclaimed control of the Michigan House after victories in key legislative races, ending two years of divided government in the state legislature. Democrats also retained control of the Michigan Senate, restoring unified Democratic control of the state legislature.
Puri is expected to succeed Republican House Speaker Matt Hall when the new legislature convenes, although the Democratic caucus must select its Speaker. Following the election results, Puri described the outcome as a “tsunami” rather than a “blue wave”.
“The people of Michigan spoke up tonight and said that they’ve had enough, and they delivered a House Democratic majority,” Puri said at the Democrats’ election watch party in Detroit.

An organisation named Impact congratulated Puri on his reelection in a post on Instagram, saying it had supported him early in his political career and was proud to call him a friend.
“With Democrats retaking the chamber, Ranjeev is expected to become Michigan’s next Speaker of the House,” the organisation said, adding that he and House Democrats would focus on lowering costs, expanding access to healthcare, and making housing and childcare more affordable for Michigan families.
Puri represents Michigan’s 24th House District, which includes Canton. He has served in the state legislature since 2021 and was selected as House minority leader effective January 2025. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Ohio State University and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
The Democratic gains in Michigan came amid a wider shift in the 2026 midterm elections, with Democrats also making significant gains nationally. The results are expected to give the party greater influence over legislative proceedings and oversight of President Donald Trump’s administration.
