“Appreciated @SecRubio’s hospitality in Atlanta for the @g20org FMM. Took stock of our bilateral cooperation,” Jaishankar posted.
The meeting followed Rubio’s India visit from October 20-21. Before departing, the US Secretary of State said the visit had advanced India-US economic and strategic priorities in the region.
During the first plenary session of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Jaishankar emphasised that military solutions cannot resolve global challenges and that diplomacy must be given a chance.
He also flagged attacks on civilian shipping and seafarers, stressing the need to uphold freedom of navigation and stop assaults under international legal frameworks, particularly UNCLOS.
Jaishankar highlighted how developing economies face restrictions on industrialisation due to market flooding, weaponisation of supply chains, limited market access and artificial distortions. He called for resilient alternative connectivity networks as international markets pursue de-risking and diversification.
He also cautioned against overlooking terrorism due to tactical calculations, describing it as a high-risk activity.
Highlighting the impact on the Global South, Jaishankar said attacks on civilian shipping threaten the affordability and availability of fuel, food and agricultural nutrients. At least 22 Indian nationals, including 14 seafarers, have lost their lives since the West Asia war began in February.
Opening the two-day meeting, Rubio warned of interconnected economic and geopolitical crises threatening global energy and food markets, supply chains, trade and freedom of navigation.
He called for cooperation to strengthen financial resilience, protect shipping routes and food security, and reduce the economic consequences of geopolitical crises.
The US will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami on December 14-15.
