Mumbai: Maintaining his dominance of the England attack, Indian Captain Virat Kohli completed a glorious double hundred to develop India’s lead to 179 on the fourth day of the fourth Test at the Wankhede Stadium.
This is Kohli’s third double hundred. He has scored four hundreds this season, with 167 against England in Visakhapatnam holding his lowest score.
Kohli’s third double hundred at Wankhede Stadium follows the 200 versus West Indies in July and 211 against New Zealand in October.
His 15th Test century was also his eighth as Indian captain and it chairs him at the third spot in the record of maximum hundreds by an Indian captain.
Former player Sunil Gavaskar with 11 centuries heads the list followed by Mohammed Azharuddin with nine.
Kohli, who has experienced a record-breaking year, reached 1,000 Test runs for 2016 and 4,000 for his career on Saturday.
Kohli’s innings, along with the partnership with Murali Vijay and Jayant Yadav, also assured that England was on the lines in spite of obtaining 400 in the first innings.
His drive from Sunday morning assured that India scored swiftly. There was a moment when Yadav was truly outscoring his skipper as the two went after the England bowling.
Throughout the process, Kohli and Yadav improved Team India’s eighth-wicket record when they passed 161. The first record was between Mohammed Azharuddin and Anil Kumble in 1996 at Kolkata, against South Africa.
