NewsMobile Reality Check: BJP get an edge in Delhi Civic polls

Date:

New Delhi: Delhiites are all set for the largest civic polls in the world as it will vote for three municipal corporations this Sunday (April 23) and the results will be declared on April 26.

NewsMobile took a metro ride across the national capital and carried a Reality Check to know the mood of the voters.

After conquering the ‘Battle For States’, BJP’s NaMo mantra seems to be working in Delhi as well. The reality check witnessed that irrespective of the candidates, people are inclined to vote for BJP.

At the same time, voters are also considering to vote for Aam Aadmi Party and Congress amid BJP’s working in MCD since a decade as people are willing change.

However, despite ruling the MCD for ten years this year too, the winds are swinging towards the BJP in Delhi’s civic polls.

Things you should know about the Civic polls:

  • The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is one of the largest civic bodies in the world, directly governing a population of 1.90 crores. The civic bodies cover more ground than the Delhi government.
  • The total number of voters for the civic polls stands at 1,32,10,206  this year, with 34 counting stations and over 70,000 government employees engaged in the election work.
  • The number of seats categorically reserved for women in the three parts is 114 out of 272.
  • More than 10,000 polling stations will be set up in all the three civic bodies in Delhi for the elections to be held on April 23.
  • The BJP emerged as the single largest party in MCD 2012. The party has been in power of all the three civics bodies in Delhi for over a decade.

MANY FIRST TIMES THESE ELECTIONS

  • Voters at this year’s MCD polls will be allowed to opt for the NOTA (None of the above) option for the very first time.

  • The Aam Aadmi Party will be contesting in MCD polls for the very first time this year. The newly-formed party of Swaraj India will also try their luck in the elections, with low chances and apparently being refused by the Election commission of India for a common Election Symbol.
  • The State Election Commission has increased the expenditure limit for a candidate from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5.75 lakh, at a time when the Congress party is alleging that the BJP has hijacked the thrones of Manipur and Goa using “money power.

The BJP, having a strong hold over the three MCDs for over 10 years, is gearing up again this time to fight against the ruling party of the state, the Aam Aadmi Party, who wish to rule the capital in all aspects.

Meanwhile, Congress is putting all its force into the MCD polls in an attempt to regain some political power in the National Capital.

The picture will be cleared on April 26 when the results will be out.
