New Delhi: In the aftermath of Diwali, tonnes of garbage remains, generated with the bursting of crackers.Â
Even though efforts are on to clean the country, the cities remains unclean – strewn with strips of paper and debris from the festival of lights.
The air is still heavily polluted with trails of phosphorous and sulphur.Â
Delhi recorded the highest level of pollution post-Diwali this year followed by Kolkata where the SPM level was 417 mg per cubic metre, and Chennai at 320 mg per cubic metre. The Met department has predicted that the air will stay polluted for the next two days.
The Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM), which directly affects breathing, was at 531 mg per cubic metre, more than five times higher than the normal level leaving many at risk of respiratory problems.
This year, like last, many have forgotten the ill-affects of bursting crackers and gone out in full zeal to celebrate at the expense of polluted cities and unhealthy residents.Â
