Beware of the cop con man

New Delhi: Con men impersonating policemen to dupe unsuspecting citizens is fast becoming a menace for the national capital’s police force with the involvement of organised gangs. Of all the cheating cases registered by the police last year, about 10% pertained to crimes committed by fake cases. 

This incident which happened with the father of senior IFS officer shows the trickery used by fake cops. 

“Today I got a call at 12.50 p.m. The caller identified himself as an officer of Delhi Police. He told me that a warrant has been issued in my name and he is trying to confirm my name and address.”

“On my enquiry about the case details and name of complainant he gave the name of Advocate Narendra Singh and the case file no. When contacted the so called Advocate, he informed me that a case has been filed for recovery of Rs 64127 by RBI.” 

“He insisted that I deposit this amount in half an hour otherwise apart from harassment a sum of Rs.14 0000 will have to be paid. He also offered to issue a cheque on my behalf in the court if I deposit this amount in a certain account right now. He agreed to give the account number name of Bank and its branch by SMS. But it never came. I got very upset and called my eldest son to take me to bank.”

“But he stopped me saying it is a fraud and such incidents are frequently occurring. I also told my son at Delhi who also said that it is a fraud. The Delhi Police are on their trail. Meanwhile this is being circulated to friends and fellow senior citizens to be aware of such fraudsters.”

A FIR has been lodged with the police. 

As per police records, fake cops work in gangs and select secluded places to carry out the crime.
