Sexist report by local news channel sparks outrage

Date:

Guwahati: You must have seen videos and news items supporting and standing beside women and their choice to do anything. But going totally the opposite way, a news video telecast by one of the popular ‪news channels in Assam has sparked controversy because of its offensive content.

The video titled “Scantily Clad Girls: A Summer Time Nuisance” was telecast by a local news channel Pratidin Time on Wednesday. The video showcased girls of ‎Guwahati roaming in the streets wearing short dresses.

The footage of the video allegedly focused on their body parts without their consent. The video went viral on ‎social media in no time raging protest all over from different platforms.

Anchor, Hemen Rajbongshi, commented how bad it is for women to expose their skin. As a ‘true protector of Assamese culture’, the reporter went on to explain how such fashion is against the Assamese culture and traditions.

Finally the anchor gives the verdict that women have to blame themselves for eve-teasing if they wear such kind of dresses.

Towards the end of the video, anchor also stated, “The world has reached Mars and in Guwahati we are still discussing clothing. This is unacceptable.”

After the video sparked outrage, Pratidin Time removed the video from YouTube but was later uploaded by a user.
