Delhi Govt okays Lokpal Bill

New Delhi: The Delhi Government on Monday approved the much talked-about Delhi Lokpal Bill, 2014. The draft Bill was cleared at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Arvind Kejriwal. Bringing the Jan Lokpal Bill to contain corruption was a key election promise made to the voters by AAP.

“We will table the Bill in the special Assembly session. We will not send it to the Centre,” said Manish Sisodia, minister of urban development department.

Congress, which has extended outside support to AAP, called it an illegal act.

Some features of the Delhi Lokpal Bill approved by the Delhi Cabinet:-

 

  • Covers all government employees, from the CM to Group D officers.
  • Legal right of protection to whistle-blowers and witnesses.
  • Time bound investigation and trial in corruption cases.
  • If beneficiary of offense is business entity, in addition to punishment provided under this law, those found guilty will have to pay fine five times the loss.
  • The Lokpal Chairperson and panel members will be selected by a panel comprising of the CM, Leader of the opposition in the Assembly, two judges of the High Court (selected in a full court meeting), one previous Lokayukta and two eminent citizens to be selected by other members of the selection committee
