No death sentence for Rajiv killers

Date:

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the Centre’s review petition against commuting the death sentence of the three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination.

The bench of Chief Justice P. Sathasivam, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh rejected the Centre’s plea.

“We have carefully gone through the review petition and the connected papers. We find no merit in the review petition and the same is accordingly dismissed,” a bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam and justices Ranjan Gogoi and S K Singh said.

The apex court had on February 18 commuted the death sentence of Santhan, Murugan and Perarivalan to imprisonment for life on the ground of delay in deciding their mercy plea by the Centre.
