Bangalore taxi drivers on strike

Date:

Bangalore: Private taxi drivers and lorry owners in Karnataka on Friday went on an indefinite strike demanding a rollback of the four-fold hike in toll on the expressway to the Bangalore international airport. More than 7 lakh commercial vehicles including cars and taxies are expected to join the protest.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had increased the toll last week. On Thursday, All India Motor Transport Congress Toll Committee (AIMTC) met Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah putting forth their demands.

Siddaramaiah said the state government will approach Centre for the solution. “I requested Oscar Fernandes (Union minister for road transport and highways) to take up a meeting and see if there is some consensus,” said Siddaramaiah.
