New Delhi: India is the largest beef exporter with 20% of global stock being supplied from the country to markets including Africa and South East Asia. However, this could be under danger with the opposition party BJP threatening to ban the industry.
The Cow is revered as holy by Hindus and the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has been sharply critical of the beef trade, slamming the current Congress-led regime for encouraging a ‘pink revolution’, a reference to thriving meat exports, and called it the Congress Party’s ‘secret agenda’.
Federal law bans the killing of cows as well as killing of milk-producing buffalo so it is the meat of the Indian buffalo, less revered than the hump-backed native Indian cow, which is mostly exported under the category of ‘beef’. However, cow meat too secretly finds its way into the export market.
