New Delhi: An ecstatic Delhi gave a red carpet welcome to Narendra Modi on Friday as he arrived in the capital. Modi is driving from the Delhi airport to the BJP Headquarters at 11, Ashoka Road; BJP has picked five spots on the route where it will felicitate him. Â
The architect of its mega victory, BJP will have 283 members in the 16th Lok Sabha, ensuring that it has a majority in the house on its own. With its allies it has 337.
The change in status from Chief Minister of Gujarat to PM-to-be was signalled by a security upgrading as Modi reached Ahmedabad airport in big cavalcade of white cars on Friday morning.
The Delhi traffic police has issued an advisory for people on the roads to avoid between 10 am and 2 pm. Â
At the BJP office, a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board, a group of top 12 leaders that signs off on crucial decisions, is scheduled for 12.30 this afternoon. Some immediate decisions need to be taken, not least who will replace Modi as Gujarat chief minister as he heads to the 7 Race Course Road residence of the Prime Minister in Delhi.
The parliamentary board, headed by party chief Rajnath Singh, is also expected to discuss the process of government formation and names for key portfolios in the Narendra Modi cabinet.
After the parliamentary board meeting, Mr Modi will leave for Varanasi, the Uttar Pradesh constituency that handed him a resounding victory in his first Lok Sabha election. He will participate in prayers at the banks of the Ganga river before flying back to Delhi in late in the evening and then back to Ahmedabad.
