Delhi Haryana and Maharashtra to experience Modi tremor

Date:

New Delhi: The Modi wave is expected to play havoc in the state elections due in the next few months for non-NDA parties. Haryana, Delhi and Maharashtra will go to polls later this year.

BJP, after garnering seven of the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana has emerged stronger. In Haryana, Congress has been ruling for the last 10 years.

In Delhi, while Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP left the people in lurch to gain extra political mileage, it could well dent their chances in the next Assembly elections. BJP MLAs Harsh Vardhan, Parvesh Verma and Ramesh Bidhuri have been elected as the MPs of Chandni Chowk, West Delhi and South Delhi, respectively. This means the vote-share of BJP, along with its ally Akali Dal’s one seat, comes down from 32 to 29 in the 70-member Assembly. BJP leaders are non-committal as far as the matter of re-elections in the city goes.

Maharashtra goes to the polls in October this year. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won only two seats (down from 17 in 2009) and NCP four (down from eight in 2009). BJP and Shiv Sena have together won 41 seats, signalling the overthrow of the 15-year hold ruling alliance.
