Wallaby lock Douglas signs for Leinster

Date:

Wallaby lock Kane Douglas has signed for Irish province Leinster, sacrificing a potential place in Australia’s 2015 World Cup plans.

The 24-year-old will join the club from the New South Wales Waratahs on a two-year deal once his Australian Rugby Union contract ends later this year.

“It’s a big decision but one which I am very excited about,” Douglas, who has made 13 appearances for the Wallabies, said late Tuesday.

“I’ve had plenty of time to weigh lots of things up and the time is right for me and my partner to experience something new and something totally different.

“We are heading for a new challenge in life and that’s what excites us.”

Douglas is seen as a replacement for Leinster’s outgoing Leo Cullen, who is hanging up his boots at the end of the season.

Leinster coach Matt O’Connor said he was a valuable addition.

“For a young guy he already has a wealth of rugby knowledge and experience under his belt and we also feel that he has the right character to succeed at Leinster,” he said.

By opting to play for the three-time former European champions in Ireland, Douglas is set to miss the World Cup next year with Australia generally only selecting players plying their club trade in their homeland.

Reports said he decided to look overseas after receiving an unsatisfactory contract offer from the ARU.
