Subcomandante Marcos, the mysterious masked leader of Mexico’s Zapatista rebels, said Sunday that he was stepping aside as chief of the 20-year-old movement.
“The voice of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) will no longer come from my voice,” Marcos, whose rebellion appeared in southern Chiapas state in January 1994, said in a statement.
