Just about a day back, the whole online prank article went viral, the world and its wife went nuts over Luis Suarez and thought he would be perfect to be plotted as the villain (read: scapegoat). Uruguay’s Suarez probably took it way too seriously. In his team’s encounter against Italy, it seemed like Suarez suddenly seemed to have a craving for some Italian delicacy, choosing to satisfy his gastronomical desires by tasting a bit of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder! Yes, this isn’t a prank or a joke, but something that very much unfolded on the field, with Chiellini’s shoulder, sporting marks of the aftermath of Suarez’s sudden interest!
What exactly happened? Â
As the clock ticked towards the 79th minute during the match between Uruguay and Italy, something halted proceedings. Chiellini was seen rushing towards the referee, lifting his jersey and showing him what seemed to be bite marks. Luis Suarez, on the other hand, was caught by Reuters photographers, holding on to his teeth. It seemed that Suarez had taken nail-biting finishes to heart, this time, replacing nails with more edible Chiellini shoulders instead!
History repeats itself!
Soccer fans might have got a shock of their lives hearing about this, for for Suarez, it’s nothing new. He’s been there, done that, so the situation is far too familiar for him. He was banned for 10 games in 2013 a similar incident: he had bitten Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in a Premier League match. In 2010 he was suspended for seven games for biting Otman Bakkal. The list doesn’t end there. He missed World Cup semi-final against the Netherlands in the previous edition. So, evidently, he has disciplinary issues, so there’s no denying the fact that he could have done it.

Ever since this news went viral, people haven’t stopped expressing their opinion on social media networks. Twitter is abuzz with #luisSuarez and there have been a lot of people who’ve made jokes out of it. Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has been absolutely irritated over the issue. He was quoted as saying, “It seems there is this animosity toward him and he is being persecuted by past events. There are people hiding behind the tree waiting for something to happen.” Chiellini was very upset that Suarez wasn’t given a red card.

If there’s anyone who’s cashing in on this whole controversy, it’s brands like McDonalds and Snickers, who seemed to have made perfect use of this opportunity using them for marketing themselves smartly. Says a tweet by McDonalds Uruguay, “If you’re still that hungry, come take a bite out of a Big Mac!†Snickers didn’t let go of the chance, tweeting, “Hey @luis16suarez. Next time you’re hungry just grab a Snickers. #worldcup #luissuarez #EatASNICKERS“
While Suarez faces up to 24 months of suspension, only time will tell if he can be third time lucky. Reality bites, you see!
