Bangalore parents take the anti-rape fight online

Date:

Bangalore: While hundreds of angry and worried parents took to the streets of Bangalore on Saturday to demand a speedy investigation into the alleged rape of a six-year-old inside an elite school, a few women in the city are now taking the online route to be heard. Since the incident came to light, more mothers have begun speaking out about how in the past too, schools have tried to hush up rape cases.

There has been a strong response to at least two online petitions that calls on the chief minister to frame a time bound road map to ensure safety for women in the city.  On July 2, a six-year-old first grade student was allegedly raped by two gym instructors at the Vibgyor High School in the city.

As a “punishment” for misbehaving, she was reportedly asked to leave her class and stay in an empty room used for storing gym equipment. She was allegedly assaulted there. Her mother found out about the assault seven days later, when a private nursing home hinted that the child could have been raped.

Though three people have been detained by the police, no arrest has been made yet.
