Furious parents protest police ‘inaction’

Date:

Bangalore: Massive protests are underway in Bangalore over police inaction as no arrests have been made yet in the rape case of a six-year old in a school in Bangalore. Civil society activists are protesting at Freedom Park in the city. The BJP Minority Morcha is also protesting over the issue.

Parents had turned out in huge numbers on Saturday and met city’s Police Commissioner and handed him a memorandum appealing for more security measures for the children. They are maintaining that they will not send their wards to school till Tuesday, the day when they meet the school management.

Meanwhile, Bangalore Police detained eight staff members of the school and questioned nearly 90 people in the case. The police, however, said that it will need at least a day or two to make a major headway in the case. “The CCTVs in place are very old and the footage cannot be downloaded. We have to gather information from various sources. There was a lot of delay in occurrence and reporting of the case. Give us a day or two and we will bring the culprit to book,” Bangalore Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar said.

With two staff members being accused of the crime, the parents are demanding a thorough background verification of teaching and non-teaching staff. Also, any violation of government mandated security guidelines should lead to de-recognition of the institution.

The incident came to light after the traumatized child reached home at around 1 PM on Monday and told her mother how an ‘uncle’ had befriended her, taken her out of school just as her classes were over and sexually assaulted her. She was allegedly assaulted when she came out of her class at around 11 AM on Monday
